I'm installing windows vista 32-bit edition from scratch, and it gets to 1% after like 5 minutes and then says "Setup could not copy a file to the hard disk(s)." then exits setup, no option to try again. What could be the problem? How can I get more detailed error information? Could it be the DVD I made has a bad sector?

That's possible. Do you have a drive with 4 gigs free space? See if you can copy all the files from the DVD to a folder on your hard drive - see if you get a copy or CRC error. -- To reply, remove TheObvious from my e-mail address.
Have you tried alternative methods of installing such as using Virtual Drive software such as Daemon Tools or NERO Image drive? Have you tried extracting the contents of the ISO to a folder in an existing install of Windows, and launch setup from there?
Try reburning the ISO at a low speed, 2x recommended, also do a CRC check on the ISO to find out its integrity. Nero MD5 Verifier is a recommended choice. If setup still fails, its likely a bad download.
I use the one from Ahead Nero http://ww2.nero.com/nero6/eng/Nero_MD5_Verifier.html
Here are the MD5/CRC values for x86 or x64 depending on which every ISO you downloaded:
x86 - File Size = 3.12 GB (3,355,598,848 bytes) - CRC Value = 0x67E089E0 - MD5 Value = 0E733AB1A8E8FF9A8684FD3639332773 x64 - File Size = 4.01 GB (4,309,368,832 bytes) - CRC Value = 0x48697711 - MD5 Value = E43502D0A15EADD551119D5639859E04
Paste the MD5 Checksum for either x64 or x86 depending on which one you want check in Step 1, Step 2 - Browse to where you stored the ISO on your drive and open it and it will automatically start the varification process and generate the has in the third field, if it matches Step 1, then you are safe. -- -- Andre Windows Connected | http://www.windowsconnected.com Extended64 | http://www.extended64.com Blog | http://www.extended64.com/blogs/andre http://spaces.msn.com/members/adacosta

Ahh thank you. I'd tried all the other things, such as using alcohol 120% to mount the image, but they all failed the same way. Now after verifying the MD5 I can see the download has been corrupted. What a pain in the ass! I'll have to wait until next month to re-download because we have bandwidth caps in New Zealand. I can't order it on cd because microsoft's credit card form is completely broken. Pretty unlike them actually...
btw sorry about my other posts in the other threads, the usenet system kept telling me there was an error when I was posting, but really it seems to have been working..
Thanks again for providing those MD5s

Order the DVD.

That's what I meant... I can't order the DVD because the credit card order form is all mucked up. It looks like it has no cascading style sheet on it, and doesn't show a price when I get to entering credit card details. If I enter my credit card credentials anyway, the form won't submit when I click the submit image. If I press enter somewhere in the form, it submits and reloads the page with no confirmation. Definitely leads me to believe it didn't work. I hope it didn't work, because I tried it about 10 times in two different browsers, over two days. That's a lot of money it might be taking off my credit card. What gives?
